Your Stubborn Kids Will Make Successful Adults

Do you have an especially strong-willed Mini on your hands? Well, according to science, that may not be a bad thing.

New research shows that stubbornness is a great predictor of future success. After following children for decades, the study found that the children who had a more difficult time abiding by their parent’s rules as early age age 9 ultimately earned higher salaries as adults.

“So, if your kid always demands the bigger cookie, they’ll probably go up to demand the bigger bonus,” Fatherly amusingly suggests.

Or rather, if your child tends to be more competitive, that might translate into the classroom and result in higher grades, Time expands. “They might be more demanding as adults; when locked in salary negotiations, they may be the ones who demand more. They may be more wiling to fight for their own financial interests, even at the risk of annoying friends and colleagues.”

But stubbornness isn’t the only tell-tale sign of happiness later on in life. Research also shows that well-to-do parents and intelligence are just as strong of predictors.

So next time you’re stuck in an argument about why you do indeed need to wear a coat in the winter or challenged over your Mini’s bedtime, as Fatherly says, “maybe you should just embrace it.”
